When Elisa and I returned from a brief yet enjoyable 2 year relocation to Charlotte, North Carolina we set as a goal to be close to all the Metorplex has to offer and yet to be surrounded by “country”. Red Oak quickly rose to the top of our list  for consideration. We were able to find a home on about an acre and a half and ever since I have continued to “develop” the gardens on the property. I take great pleasure in spending time putting together small areas for the wildlife to join us as we enjoy our little slice of heaven here on earth.

For a few years I included a vegetable garden but the amount of time to do it right is not quite within my grasp. Maybe next year and I think at least I will include some Loofa gourds in a corner somewhere. From my past experience they were easy to grow and you can never have too many Loofa sponges.  Meanwhile however I have enjoyed establishing and maintaining our landscape. Below are a few pictures of some of my favorite plantings along with information on some of my favorite resources.

Some Bridal Wreath Spirea in spring bloom. Next to it on the left you can almost make out the Golden Rain Tree. I planted both of these from root stock about 5 years prior to this photo.

Finally…. 6 years after planting my Redbud tree from root stock it got some decent flowers. They don’t show real well in this shot but it really sprouted this year. I’m sure that every year will improve from here on in.

The Wisteria in the background of this birdhouse is beautiful but bring your shears, Wisteria requires extensive pruning if you try to tame it and becomes unruly if you don’t.

This Forsythia has been blooming for a couple of years. Planted from root stock 8 years ago it has taken a long time to establish.

With the exception of the Wisteria, I planted all of the above with root stock I receive in the mail. They are 18” inches long or smaller when received and arrive in a long plastic bag sealed with moisture and gel for survival. I have had some good success stories and a few disappointments. All were either received as membership incentives or purchased from the National Arbor Day Foundation. Their website is  http://www.arborday.org/ . If you are like me and want to try different varieties, have time to wait for things to grow and ok a little frugal in this area give them a try. This year they encouraged me to join a study group on the growth of Hazelnut bushes. I picked them out a good spot and have them in the ground, I am very anxious to see how they thrive, I love hazelnuts (filberts). All in all I recommend the foundation and their efforts throughout the world.
